Welcome Letter from our Program Director
Welcome to St. Petersburg General Hospital Graduate Medical Education!
We are happy that you are considering our program as a potential site to continue your medical training. Currently, we offer the following ACGME-approved postgraduate programs: Transitional Year and Family Practice Residency PGY-1, PGY-2 & PGY-3.
The St. Petersburg General Hospital Family Medicine Residency program’s mission is to develop the next generation of physicians and physician leaders. As a part of HCA Healthcare, we are driven by a single mission: Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.
This program is designed to offer residents a rewarding, educational environment where residents are provided individualized learning opportunities by faculty and staff who support and sustain one another throughout quality care delivery. Our faculty are committed to ensuring the residents' clinical experience and educational needs are fulfilled while expanding residents’ perspectives to be inclusive of cultures, values, and ideals.
The Family Medicine Residency Program at St. Petersburg General Hospital is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
The residency program utilizes a variety of teaching methods and settings to maximize the learning experience of the resident. Each curriculum area combines rotations, conferences and experience to provide the resident with a comprehensive training program.
The Family Medicine Residency program is designed to teach and train residents to enter into the field of Family Medicine, prepare them for board certification and provide them with the knowledge they will need to both care for patients in the primary care office arena and also in the environs of the hospital.
It is our feeling that for a resident to be properly trained in this era, they are best served by being capable of functioning in the hospital environment, but with a strong primary care base during the course of training.
Get to Know the Team
We have a diverse group of teaching faculty of over 100 physicians (DO and MD) who are committed to sharing their wealth of knowledge and experience which has helped to shape and mold many careers.
Our faculty members nurture the values and behaviors that strengthen the doctor-patient relationship and that sustain the profession of medicine as an ethical enterprise.
Their desire to assist us in the training of young physicians is greatly appreciated by the program directors, hospital administration and, most importantly, our interns and residents.
Admir Seferovic, MD, DABFM, FAAFP
Our program currently has 30 approved residencies.
We began in 2008 underneath the American Osteopathic Association, but we were accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in 2018. Our sponsoring institution is HCA Healthcare West Florida GME Consortium and we are affiliated with the University of South Florida (USF).
St. Petersburg General Hospital is also home to an ACGME initially accredited Transitional Year Residency Program with 6-9 interns each year.
Residents rotate through outpatient clinics, inpatient internal medicine, ambulatory medicine, emergency medicine, and critical care as well as other elective medicine and surgical specialties.
