(St. Petersburg, FL, April 21, 2016) St. Petersburg General Hospital is proud to announce the start of a new tele-stroke program. This collaborative and innovative program will improve patient and physician access to neurology expertise within minutes of a patient presenting with stroke symptoms in the emergency department.
With electronic communication methods, patients have 24/7 access to board certified neurologists/stroke experts to help evaluate conditions and confer with ER physicians at the bedside. The phrase "Time is Brain" emphasizes the urgency of time in stroke care and this new technology will increase the chances a stroke patient has of recovering. The goal is to enhance stroke care in the community by allowing physicians in the ED to immediately connect with neurologists and share brain scans and consult about treatment. It is a state-of-the-art program that allows for improved access to care. The tele-stroke program utilizes evidence-based practice measures, delivering the highest quality of care to stroke patients.
The Emergency Department at St. Petersburg General Hospital includes Critical Care, Fast Track, Senior Care and now Teleneurology, examining and treating over 40,000 patients a year. The hospital is certified as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center and an accredited Chest Pain Center.
"With stroke as the fifth cause of death in the US and as the leading cause of disability, the first "golden" hour after arrival time is critical for rapid assessment and administration of clot-busting medications. This innovative program has the potential of significantly reducing time to treatment for those experiencing a stroke. This technology will benefit our community by improving medical actions during that critical time and correspondingly, patient outcomes." stressed Henry Kurusz, MD, Medical Director of the ED.
