Clearwater, FL - Honor Flight® Network is a non-profit organization that pays tribute to America’s combat-era Veterans for their sacrifices through a one-of-a-kind trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the Memorials built in their honor. Now the local hub, Honor Flight of West Central Florida (HFWCF), is teaming up with community partners to make a difference for Veterans right here in our own backyard.
Honor Flight gives top priority to World War II Veterans and those who are terminally ill. For Veterans who physically cannot make an Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C., HFWCF, Empath Health, Duke Energy and HCA St. Petersburg General Hospital joined forces to ensure they receive the tribute they deserve at the inaugural ‘Honor Flight at Home’ special event.
On Saturday, March 28, from 1 - 3 p.m., invited Veterans from Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough Counties will come together for Honor Flight at Home at Empath Health, located at 5771 Roosevelt Blvd., Clearwater, Fla. 33760.
The event will include many traditions of the standard Honor Flight, such as a musical tribute to the military Branches, a virtual tour of the World War II Memorial, a special mail call where each Veteran receives letters from family and friends, and the special ‘Welcome Home’ celebration by a grateful community.
The Keynote Speaker is Mrs. Brenda Schwarzkopf. Married 44 years, she is the wife of the late U.S. Four Star Army General Norman Schwarzkopf. He was the head of Central Command before retiring in 1991. Of the 39 Veterans attending, 33 are from WII, 4 Korean and 2 Vietnam wars.
The general program is not open to the public, but is available for media attendance and by invitation only to Veterans and a guest. At 1:15 p.m. the public is requested to gather for the ‘Welcome Home’ portion of the celebration, anticipated to begin promptly at 1:30 p.m.
