St. Petersburg, FL - St Petersburg General Hospital was recently designated as a >GYN Robotic Epicenter by Intuitive Surgical, the maker of the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System.  The Epicenter Program purpose it to provide interested surgeons the unique opportunity to observe highly skilled and experienced robotic surgeons doing actual surgical procedures on patients. Equally important is the observation of the collaboration of the whole robotic surgical team composed of anesthesiologists, OR nurses and OR technicians necessary to optimize the patient outcomes and efficiencies of the operating room processes.

St Petersburg General Hospital is now one of twenty-four select U.S. GYN Robotic Epicenters.  These epicenters have combined experience exceeding 5,000 cases and have been chosen for excellence in patient outcomes and dedication to assisting new surgeons through their initial case series.  St Petersburg General Hospital is one of only two in the state of Florida.

New surgeons and their teams visit Epicenter sites to observe cases and learn robotic surgical techniques. Epicenter surgeons then become mentors and/or proctors for these new surgeons in their learning journey. Even after new robotic surgeons have successfully completed their initial case series, these mentor-trainee relationships endure through discussions at scientific conferences and through advanced training.

Dr. Meena Jain is a board certified Gynecologist with an active practice in St Petersburg and is recognized as the designated GYN Robotic Mentor for the hospital by da Vinci.  As a mentor, she provides the visiting surgeon and their team a personalized experience tailored to answer their many questions about the application of this new technology and demonstrates the surgical advantages for specific procedures considered to be best practices in the robotic medical community.

St. Petersburg General Hospital has committed significant resources over the past several years as it has developed it’s robotic program with the goal of achieving Epicenter status thereby providing the opportunity to train future robotic surgeons.   The hospital acquired the first da Vinci robot in 2008.  In July of 2011, St Petersburg General Hospital was the first in the Tampa Bay area to purchase and install the new da Vinci Si Surgical System, the latest technologically advanced robot available, along with the most modern technologically advanced virtual simulator.  This dual system combined with maximization of robotic surgical training from an experienced minimally invasive robotic surgeons, establishes St Petersburg General Hospital as one of the premier robotic surgical programs in the state of Florida.
